Widnes has many intersting listed buildings of Special Architectural or Historc Interest. The Lists are Crown copyright: Department of Culture, Media and Sport. They are available for download from Halton Borough Council from the links below.

Date listed: 31 October 1983
Grade II

West Bank Mersey locks St Helens Canal II East lock with restored gates, one of pair of locks where the St Helens Canal joins the River Mersey at Spike Island, 1833 with later alterations and repairs. The locks control a difference in water level of 12' between canal and river level. Constructed of large timber with massive posts and rails; the canal end gate with catwalk. Gate restoration to east lock and removal of gates and sealing of north end of west lock formed part of an enhancement scheme in 1981.

    Viaduct street was in the West Bank area of Widnes (just one S). It was a continuation of Church street, which is still there, but was cleared to make way for the Silver jubilee (Runcorn) bridge approach in the 1960's.
